OVERVIEW

Ordinary creativity is the focus of this project. Document and analyze one example of a YouTuber, Instagrammer, TikTokker, or another individual who has embraced the identity of a digital author to deconstruct and analyze the choices they make and discover what aspects of their work are most appreciated by their target audiences. You will create a screencast analysis video that gives insight on this individual's work by applying the critical questions and key concepts of digital and media literacy. Your purpose is to help a general audience gain insight on the ways in which ordinary creativity is expressed by digital authors expressing their ideas on digital platforms.

  1. SELECT A DIGITAL AUTHOR WHOSE WORK YOU WILL ANALYZE

For this assignment, we are focusing on digital authors using YouTube, Instagram, TikTok because less is known about their creative choices. You may have a favorite digital author in mind or you may wish to review these examples of authors, artifacts and topics. Please place your choice on the page below so that each student selects a different subject:

Because the choice of a digital author and an work product (or digital artifact) will shape the content of what you discuss in your screencast, choose something that's interesting and important to you, as you will be considering the potential social, cultural, political and economic implications of this ordinary person's creative expression.

  1. SELECT A PARTICULAR WORK TO ANALYZE

You must review many examples of the creative individual's work in order to understand to deconstruct and analyze the choices they make and discover what aspects of their work are most appreciated by their target audiences. Select one example to examine in detail. Gather as much information as you can to answer the following questions:

  1. Who is the author and what is the purpose? Who's the intended audience?

  2. What techniques are used to attract and hold your attention?

  3. What lifestyles, values and points of view are represented?

  4. How might different people interpret this message differently?

  5. What is omitted?
