Scope of Work

Working Title: Resilience - A Summer Reading Project

Executive Summary

This project is a series of three video book trailers intended to engage and encourage high school students to select a summer reading book and pursue projects after reading the book. The genre is a tried and true “teaser,” similar to a movie trailer, that provides selected shots from the work. The purpose of the trailer is to attract a reader to the book. The trailer highlights will be drawn from the most exciting, funny, or otherwise noteworthy parts of the book but in abbreviated form (and without producing spoilers.) The videos will be disseminated to the students in my school through a summer reading website, social media and publicly on YouTube.

Creative Brief

These three videos are part of a larger summer reading program overhaul that I am leading in my school in response to the virus shutdown. The videos will promote the summer reading books to the students directly, as in the past the faculty has promoted the books and encouraged the students to read over the summer. The videos will be 1 ½ to 2 minutes long and there will also be an instructional video to assist students as they navigate access to the new digital collection of eBooks & audiobooks provided by my school.

Project Objectives

The purpose and goals of this project is to promote summer reading among the students at my high school. Although this is a perennial goal, it takes on a particular importance this year as many experts predict significant learning loss akin to the “summer slide” due to the early school closures. As a result of this project, students will select books and explore new information. They may take away new insights into how people have overcome difficult challenges and students’ behaviors may be changed as they are inspired to read more.

Deliverables

There will be three short video book trailers and a short instructional screencast. All will feature compelling visuals and may have voice narration. They are:

Treatment

The three short video book trailers will provide an emotional story that will entice the student to find out more by reading the book. Each will give enough of the storyline to spark interest without spoiling the story or giving away the plot. Each video will be short, visually appealing and end by encouraging the student to check out the book and find out more.

Resources Needed and Constraints

Computer and access to books (both print and digital) is needed. Most significant constraint is time.
