Introduction

When initially choosing a topic for our Leap Two Project, we decided upon advancing viewers' knowledge of Copyright and Fair Use on Social Media Platforms. After reading this from the chapters in the Create to Learn textbook as well as the various other articles that you provided us, this topic interested me and brought me on a journey to further my knowledge.

Initially, we wanted to be able to touch on what Copyright and Fair Use policies are while having the audience question out of interest if their property was safe on social media. Being a broad topic, we focused directly on discussing how platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have made great strides to insure the safety of users intellectual and creative makings. We focused our video on our target audience, which is users of any age who are active on various social media sites to show them how they are safe posting their makings. By giving a more broad target audience instead of just focusing on a specific age group, we believe that we had the opportunity to speak to the mass amount of individuals who are active on social media sites.

To further our message, we discussed real life instances of how Copyright and Fair Use have affected people's work. We discussed how one 30-second YouTube video was falsely taken down under violation of Copyright and Fair Use Laws but was proved wrong under the Supreme Court. Personally, before diving into this topic, I wasn’t educated upon how my creative and intellectual work was protected under Copyright Laws. I used to believe that I could upload anything that I wanted and even edit and remake my own copies of people's work. We wanted people to question- and even ask themselves if they have violated any of these Laws unintentionally or have had any of their work taken down by a social media platform. My partner Emily mentions in the video how she has had one of her videos on YouTube flagged and removed because of the use of a song. This might have happened to many of us, but our intentions behind discussing this topic is to highlight how mistakes happen, but give an explanation on why this occurs.

Creative Process

Browsing through the various resources that were available for us to use, we ultimately decided to use Animaker as it appeared to be the most user friendly, and fit within our topic range for creative makings. With difficulties such as trouble uploading voice files and editing specific scenes into our videos, this took longer than I expected to complete. We strived to successfully complete this project and learn the various different steps that video editing takes. Although difficult at first, we discovered how to use this application through various videos and steps which furthered our knowledge on working with Animaker. Collaborating with partners is a great way to advance our interpersonal communication skills, especially over digital devices such as Facetime, Email and Text messages. Although it would have been more efficient to meet in person to work on this together, it helped me learn valuable time management skills relating to working with people online. I believe that this was a great project for students and advanced my competence of online video applications that are available to use. Being able to choose our own topics gave us the opportunity to highlight an important aspect of creative media and understanding how and why you are protected on social media.
