LEAP 1 Reflection

1 March 2020

As it came time for me to choose who I would critically analyze for the LEAP 1 assignment, I wanted to pick a person on YouTube who I have watched for a while. Watching vlogs on YouTube has been something I have loved doing for years now. Whether I am cleaning my room and just listening to videos as background noise, or watching how other teachers teach content that I am not familiar with, YouTube is a platform I have loved for a while. In the weeks leading up to this assignment, I went back into the readings and reread the content with the open mindset of who this content relates to most. Carli Bybel entered my mind in each reading as we learned about the various aspects of vlogging. As previously mentioned, I have been watching Carli for years, so I also felt as though I had a strong understanding of the content she chooses to show on her channel.

When it came to create my screencast, I followed a digital storytelling sequence as I prepared. I knew that I wanted my audience to watch the video while I spoke over and explained my critical findings. In order to do this, I first took each question I would answer and scripted out what I would say according to what I saw in the video. It was at this point that I wondered if Carli had read chapters 3, 4, and 5 of Create to Learn. It seemed as though she had the sequence down to a science and I still wonder if she has had explicit instruction in this or if she has just naturally developed the understanding over the years of making YouTube videos.

Once I scripted out what I would say I began to record my screencast. At first, I wanted each question I answered to line up exactly with that point in the video. However, I ended up accidentally ending the screencast mid-way, and was unable to add onto the video I already had. I knew that I could start from the point I left off on, but then I would have needed to combine both of the videos and I am not that comfortable with imovie and performing such a task. I figured it would be better for me to just rerecord the entire thing from scratch.

Once I completed the screencast and watched the video back, I was very happy with how it turned out. I discovered that the points I wanted to make overlapped and repeated throughout Carli’s video, so it was not a huge deal that I lost my first screencast video. After completing the screencast, I was able to reflect on the way I have previously watched videos up until this point. I was also able to understand how I, as a viewer have been directly impacted by Carli’s ethos and performance. Additionally, I appreciate her ability to demonstrate the skill to the viewer (me). Overall, this was a very engaging and insightful LEAP project that I truly enjoyed.
