Reflection

While reading the Digital Storytelling Cookbook in preparation for this assignment, I found the seven steps in digital storytelling to be extremely helpful to me. Although I am someone who reflects often, I usually just do it in my head. While completing the seven steps, I was forced to write down and reflect on aspects of my story that I would usually skip over. I knew that I wanted to talk about my journey to becoming a teacher, but it was a little difficult for me to reflect on my time away in college. What I would consider to have been my lowlight actually was my highlight in a way. I now understand how this is so important to the story I was telling, and the overall message I wanted to convey through my story. I think when you speak your story out loud it allows a person to heal internally. Our brains have a way of suppressing memories we don’t want to remember, but when we speak them out loud its almost like we are healing that part of our brain.

I think that digital storytelling allows the person to tell their story in a way that is comfortable for them. Allowing students the options of a podcast, video, or screencast allows the author safety in telling their story. There is no right or wrong answer to telling your story, and I find that to be a beautiful thing. Especially, when the pressure of writing and grammar are eliminated, there is more focus on the story and message that is being delivered. This project is definitely something I am going to bring into my second grade classroom, especially since we are now virtually learning!
